Cheap folks/Do people not care?

The reason why I'm writing this is because I work at a grocery store and we have to ask folks if they'd like to donate to the Berks County Food Bank. Well, today was the first day of probably two weeks of it. I am a cashier and so whenever I ask this, most people say no. And when I hear that, I think to myself, "why are these people so cheap?" They buy all of this food for themselves, and yet do not care to think about those who really need it most, the poor. Jesus was the poorest of the poor, and yet he still gave. There are others in the Bible who were incredibly poor, yet gave, because they knew they would be blessed later. When I go grocery shopping on Friday or Saturday, I will donate. Not only will I donate because I feel that the poor need food, but I also will feel like donating because it's a buck people! It's not alike I'm asking you to give 100 bucks a pop to them. Also, people don't think of others around them, they just think of their own self centered lives and not around to anyone else, when we should think about others before ourselves, not the other way around.

  1. I see what you're saying, and I do agree. But let me offer the other perspective.

There have been times when I go to Giant and they ask for a dollar for something...then I go to Target and they ask for a dollar...then I go somewhere else...well, you get the idea.

I usually say yes because its only a dollar and I don't want the cashier to think I'm cheap. But at the same time, the cashier does not know me. I give money to churches, missionaries, and other organizations. Every time I go to the grocery store, I have to give another dollar? Yes, its only a dollar. But if I am giving because I feel forced, rather than because I consciously choose to, is that what Christ wants?

I guess what I am trying to say is that you should be very careful about judging who is cheap. Maybe those people have consciously decided to give to certain charities. Maybe they already give to the Food Bank! Some are cheap...some have good reasons not to give.

  2. I'd tend to agree with Dave. I too will usually give when asked... because of course "it's only $1". However, as Dave said I give to several other organizations that the cashiers at the grocery store are not aware of...

I prefer to give in ways that aren't obvious to people around me. God is the only person I'm accountable to, and he knows how I utilize my money. I think that if people see me give money away, that has the potential to evolve into pride. The feeling of satisfaction that I might get from having people know about my good deed is unimportant and short-lived.
    Also read Matthew 6:1-4.

All I'm saying is... Don't judge people based on the 30 seconds you have spent with them in the grocery store line. Even if they are truly selfish, greedy people should you treat them with or without love, kindness and compassion?
